Christiansen is a controller of the seafarers union and controls the ships in the port of Hamburg. His mission is to expose the so-called “flag of convenience-ships”. He sneaks around on the ferries in the port of Hamburg dressed like a tourist, and inspects the galleys, berths, and lounge rooms of seafarers, to talk with them about their salaries. “It is more common than not that shipping companies deceive sailors into working for cheap wages.” says Christiansen, a member of the International Seamen’s Union ITF. Most important to him is ensuring that the minimum wage is being strictly adhered to, and if necessary he will enforce this by going on strike.
