Southern Hospitality is the story of an African American young adult named Ethan who decides to surprise his mother, Beatrice, on the news of his sudden engagement with his Caucasian girlfriend, Alma. During dinner Alma asks Beatrice for the family recipe of the sweet potato salad, but Beatrice tells her its a ‘Family’ recipe only. Ethan takes this as the opportunity to break the news to his mother of the engagement. Shocked, Beatrice storms off and an argument ensues between the mother and son, with Alma joining in. At first, Beatrice seems totally against the marriage only because of Alma’s race as a Caucasian, it is revealed later in a discussion with Ethan that his father was beaten by Caucasians years ago.
