Dedication: This short is a dedication to the passing of a close friend, the wife and daughter he left behind, and his brother who moved across the country to be a father figure to his niece. Story: This film is about a woman who’s husband passes just as she discovers she is pregnant. The couple planned to have a child, and she anticipates his arrival to tell him the news only to answer to his brother, who informs her of the fatal accident that took her husband’s life just moments earlier. As they mourn, she is visited by his spirit who guides and comforts her in what to do. Inspiration: The story is told entirely through music and dance. Luther Vandross’s ‘Superstar’ serves as the entire audio. Singing and movement provides for a higher dimension of emotional expression, and I found that essential to telling this emotionally sensitive story. This particular song always elicited strong emotion in both my and my CoDirector’s lives. I reinterpreted his lyrics to tell this story of dedication and love between couples and family. Community: Im dedicated to representing two of the communities that are underrepresented and marginalized in media: Black filmmakers and actors, and the Hip Hop dance community. Urban dance forms are simply not represented enough artistically in film. This film is allowing the Hip Hop dance form to be represented in film as an emotional experience. |
