Wow, what a mess. It’s not so much a remake but more like fan fiction; taking the Ju-On curse - in name only - and Westernizing it. I agree with others regarding the music, which screams at you so loudly in parts, that even the jump-scares lose their impact.
The original Ju-On and The Grudge didn’t do much better in terms of ratings, but are certainly better films if you’re into suspenseful Asian horror.
The persistent, obnoxious, cacophony that attempts to pass jump scares seals the fate for this re-make of “Ju-On”. This film is an insult to horror fans everywhere. The sheer, ear drum piercing volume for the soundtrack is reminiscent of a toddler banging on a piano during a temper-tantrum. The acting relied solely on the soundtrack, so there’s is not much to say there other than it was pretty forced. This film was an absolute chore to watch. I wouldn’t even recommend it as background noise whilst doing the dishes.

Trash
Finally watched The Grudge 2020, it’s a little fast paced with so many quick storylines. You can’t quite enjoy the great cast as much or get that long drawn out creep factor. It’s an interesting “Untold Story” which keeps in good standing with its original predecessors. However in a sense it’s just an American remake done in America. Unlike the others which kept well connected with Japan and had Takashi Shimizu highly involved; who had done the original Ju-On series. All-in-all it has some decent scares and is worth the watch if you’re a Grudge Fan. What I find most interesting is the possibility of a future crossover with The Ring series (which also attempted an okay continuation recently). Anyways that’s my take on it. Enjoy.
eff 03/10 : New HD Versions. Clean Audio & Video!
meh, it was nothing special.
The filmmakers are claiming this is a side story to the 2004 remake. It has even been title “The Grudge: The Untold Chapter” for home video release. I call bull on that, as this was very obviously intended to be a remake,as they redid serveal scenes from the original. The “side story” claim is just an excuse to explain all the changes they made.
The Trailer scared the shit out of me but the comments make it feel like a movie that if yea turned the volume down it would be a soap opera,,guess its the watch that will be the true decision maker,Edit after the watch.
