If Hunter S. Thompson was still alive, he’d prolly (literally) shoot someone (not kidding) after he saw this. This is worse than The Rum Diaries. Who even allowed this? His son, Juan? I doubt it, this is just bad. I’m not sure if this movie is lazy or just dumb. There are better ways to make a buck than exploiting the legend of a dead man. The sad thing is the guy they got for the lead isn’t bad, he coulda pulled it off, his voice is even right, but the director obviously saw a few Johnny Depp movies and had ideas about things that weren’t right. People need to separate Hunter S. Thompson from the character, Raoul Duke, he created for Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas. People need to acquaint themselves with the legal fiction of “SWIM (Someone Who Isn’t Me)” in order to really get it. And for those who want to know who this man really was, he wrote more than just Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas. Read his stuff, there’s lots of it, check out his interview videos. He was a paradox, he was far from perfect, he was violent and digressionary but he was an idealist who always thought things could be better. Like this movie. This movie could be so much better.
