This felt like a story i wanted to see and i like daisy, yet watching her portray the real life woman who accomplished the feat at that time was too much of a stretch.
I of course began by learning if this was based on a book or true story then finding out about the real story first and once i realized the simple logistics of swimming the channel at that period without a wetsuit for warmth with daisys BMI i just couldn’t. I think i watched about until she aged into actual ridely and just quit it.
I mean sure its normal to upsell the beauty factor or whatever in most everything today but this was quite an upsell and not even to a body type i could picture being attached to the story.
To me it was far too problematic disney being the fuel for childrens imaginations balanced against thoughts of unrealistic body image portrayals seemed outright wrong to me more so than usual in this case.
They missed a big opportunity to have someone far less conventionally attractive and with a body like the real life woman to promote realistic diversity.
I don’t even consider myself a feminist ally mind you yet this seemed like a slap in the face. A british girl of that class with such immaculately straight teeth in that era before braces became fairly common or accessible?
Still thats the problem sometimes with getting older you can’t get into the magic without seeing the tricks.
Do yourself a favor enjoy the movie first THEN research the real woman afterwards. Or maybe don’t.
