A coming of age story set in the late 1960s that takes a nostalgic look at a black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama through the point-of-view of imaginative 12 year-old Dean. I’m loving Dúle Hill in this. It was unexpected to see him as an old school dad.

First episode was fantastic. Looking forward to more.

I thought somebody had uploaded a bunch of episodes of the original and got all excited, because I never got to watch it the first time around, but this, I just can’t.

I don’t think one can say that the original was “idealized”, given that the show rang true for lots of white, suburban American kids growing up in the late 1960s (I was one). Nor can one say that the show was for a “specific focus group” — the US was a majority white nation for a long time (it still is, tho it soon won’t be), so its TV shows have reflected that reality.

I’m comfortable with the demographic shifts in the US, and I’m very glad that at least parts of the US are a bit more openminded (such that OTA networks are airing TV shows about the lives of people with vastly different experiences) — I’m just noting that we should strive to be accurate when we write/talk about anything. Thanks.

what “idealised for a specific focus group” in the same way this new version is?

Pretty much as on par as if they redid fresh prince of Bel-Air with Justin Bieber in the lead.

i’d like to see a remake of Sandford and Son, now that would be funny..

It’s not a remake. It’s the same time frame, focusing on entirely different characters, being able to tell the stories and events from the late 60s that the original could not touch on for fear of upsetting certain people. Fred Savage directs and produces it, hence it even retains the same feel. It’s Wonder Years adjacent, if you will.
