You’re right, Flicker. On August 16, 2018, TNT ordered a sequel series based upon the 1997 follow-up novel The Angel of Darkness. However, they ultimately decided instead to create a second season of Alienist, which premiered on July 19, 2020 and will finish out this 8-episode season on August 9.

Oh Boy! I can’t wait for season 2 to start tonight! My friends don’t like this drama and I can understand that. Season 1 dealt with the death of a child and that is hard to take and watch. Just hope season 2 goes in a different direction and by watching the trailer, it does and looks exciting. Dakota Fanning still seems a bit ridged but I think the character she portrays is an uptight lady and women in the 1800’s certainly weren’t cops but she is making her mark though!

She seems to be loosening up and standing her ground.

This show is amazing!

The best part about the second season of the Alienist is its lack of the alienist. These kinds of shows perplex me, going to all of these efforts and great cost to recreate conditions of the past and then using terms like “serial killer” about three quarters of a century early. The worst offending character is the titular man himself. This continues quite past the point of irritation, making the character act like he’s written for a decade other than the one in which the others seem to exist. Luckily, they quash this in the first series, though it is allowed to go on far too long.

Season one was finding the killer of young boys which was hard to watch. But, I’m not sure if I can take season 2 after watching episode one. Another dark season it looks like and yes, it is for affect but I find myself in a bit of a mind numbing wrecked state of mind after watching this episode. I’ll give episode 2 ago and see how I feel once it is over.

I’ve been keeping an eye out to see if you posted what you thought after you watched episode 2… I’m not sure if I can or should watch this series, for the same reasons you mentioned previously. Did you end up watching the 2nd episode of this current season, or did you hang it up after episode 1? I’m very curious to find out what you think of this current season, if you continued it! Even though season 1 is very dark and is about one of the most heinous types of crime, bc it involves children, is it still worth a watch bc it is so well done and or bc the storylines are so good? Is season 1 worth a watch without season 2??
Ps. Thank you so much for writing reviews! When I check out reviews for a show or movie I’m thinking of watching, I always look to see if you’ve written one! ☺ You write then so well and always have such thoughtful reviews! Thank you and major kudos!

Yes, I continued to watch and I think the writers decided to not let the killer continue because viewers like you and me really don’t want to see this type of despicable killing(s) and to drag it out. But, they do take us on a journey into the mind of why women and other killers do this type of killings of children. I like seeing how detective work has evolved. Bellvue would have scared the s____t out of me because psychiatrics was still rather messed up and doctors did more harm than good. And it took years for the NYPD to establish good detective work and to listen to professionals who were learning to deal with this type of criminal. Have you watched Dead Still? It’s a fine British crime drama (set in the 1800’s I believe) and one of the detectives saw the value of forensic photography but had a hard time convincing the superiors that having photos of crime scenes would be worth having especially at trials.

Loving this series!!!

Will it ended in a way that could produce a 3rd season. “TNT has yet to grant the series another renewal, there’s still a decent chance The Alienist will return for a third season, given that the books upon which the series is based leave plenty of content ripe for the picking.” I hope there is a 3rs season and set in 19th century. The writer of the books has a 3rs book but it takes place in 2016. But, he is writing another set in the 19th century and could become the 3rd season for The Alienist.
