Yeah, because the alternative was even more people dying. They at least gave a chance for more people to live. And now it’s not just everyone from a single group. It can be an even amount from every group so that it is balanced. Protecting only your personal friends and family is selfish. When forced to only have a certain number of survivors, the most useful are the wisest choice. Otherwise you risk the survivors dying due to no one being able to help them survive. Saving women and children first is unwise since they can’t fend for themselves very well. It should be a balance of all. A balance is necessary.
