Alice was based on the 1975 film, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. After her husband, Donald, was killed in a truck accident, Alice Hyatt and her 12-year-old son, Tommy, moved out of their home in New Jersey and headed for Hollywood. Alice's dream was to become a singer but for the time being she got work as a waitress in a greasy spoon, Mel's Diner after her car breaks down in Phoenix. Mel was gruff and demanding and constantly bossing his three waitresses around. The other two waitresses, in the beginning were Flo and Vera. Flo was the man-hungry southern belle, who's favorite saying was "Kiss My Grits." The other waitress, Vera, was shy and quiet and somewhat, as Mel put it, "dingy." Flo left in 1980 for her own series and was replaced by Belle who was later replaced by Jolene. |

gosh i miss this show it was fabulous!
Rip alice use to love this show .
WOW, So loved this show!!! Kill my Grits!! lol
After watching several reruns in a bid to capture my youth. I have come on here to proclaim that Beth Howland played her part so well as Vera. I guess type casting became a huge problem or she just didn’t want to act anymore. Whatever the case the show has helped me get through one of the lowest points in my life. Thank you Primewire for saving my sanity.
She was the Salem cigarette girl and she did a lot of sit-com roles until her death (from lung cancer). This is a classic series, though I prefer MTM show. X
yes that was a very funny show too. I did not know she died of lung cancer. My uncle died of that it is a hideous way to go. So sad
I read that Vic Taybeck was born in Brooklyn NY but his parents immigrated from Aleppo(Syria) I had no idea he was of Arabian descent. So cool to now know this little bit of trivia. He only lived until he was 60 years old of a heart attack. Such a shame to have died so young.
For those of us who use public television digital channels. Alice is a staple in show rotation. Linda Lavin was hot in Barney Miller.
Good show.
My mother watched this, so I did to.
Might be (for me) interesting to see the 1st ep. or so.
wow this is great. Time to revisit my childhood. Thank you for all the long work this took
It looks like VidSrc is a good option for episodes.
