In The Casa de la Trova a man and woman start a formal, closed embrace and the very sensual dance of Son, one of the earliest Cuban music forms, begins. Cuban Son is the backbone for contemporary salsa and was probably the most popular dance music genre to emerge from Cuba during the early 20th century. The word Son, literally means ‘sound’ in Spanish, and began as a dance of the rural working classes. In The Kings of the ‘Cuban Son,’ the main characters are what brings us near the present time of a musical genre that has influenced the life of the Cubans for many decades. They take us on a journey and involve us in their daily lives, as the city becomes the main character. |
