An art school Borat, in the tradition of Russell Brand’s ‘African Child.’ David Kagan - a white, NYU-trained performance artist - jets off to Ghana to record an African pop album. Through confessionals and fly on the wall footage, Obruni Papa tells the story of Kagan’s self-centered journey, as well as that of his stony-faced Ghanaian collaborators. Self-penned songs sprinkled intermittently throughout. Kagan critically engages with the dubious practice of privileged artists visiting the third world for inspiration, authenticity, and cheap labor and rent. Obruni Papa was made possible through a generous grant from the Art Matters Foundation. |
