Details:

Among diaspora Muslims, there is a broad spectrum of political and social attitudes with a large gap separating conventional, traditional Muslims from those who identify as progressive. Indeed, the majority of diaspora Muslims who identify as moderate are essentially conservative; moderate only when compared to radical jihadists. Progressive Muslims, however, are a small but growing movement that believe in human rights, including women’s rights and the rights of the LGBT community. They believe in the separation of church and state; in freedom of speech; and that Shari’a law is man made and therefore can be adapted to the 21st century. Ijtihad means critical thinking in Arabic. In Ijtihad: Feminism and Reform, you meet nine Muslims with progressive values.
