Judy Garland’s last year of life is brought into heart-breakingly sharp focus in “Judy”. Renée Zellweger’s physical and emotional mimicry of Judy is poignant and true-to-life. Although I was hesitant to watch this biopic, I am very glad I did. It is not a life story, but a snippet at the end of a life, that includes the emotional life of the gifted and large-hearted, Judy Garland. Whilst the verbal interactions from the film cannot be authenticated, the situations can. I very much enjoyed the light they have Judy in; it feels respectful. Lorna Luft (one of Judy’s two daughters) has stated that she will not watch this film so as to protect her mother’s “legacy and legendary career”, and further encourages fans to watch her [Judy’s] films to learn about her. “Judy” is marvelously acted, and Zellweger is nearly mesmerising to someone who’s watched Judy Garland films. To compare the Judy of this film with the real Judy Garland, watch “The Wizard of Oz”, “A Star is Born”, and “Meet Me in St. Louis”, and you will know that the Judy of this film, is the Judy that should be known.

I’ve never particularly been a big fan of either Garland or Zellweger, but this was fantastic. She managed to mimic Garland’s awkward, jerky stage movements and mic mannerisms, her facial expressions, and even her speech pattern extremely well. My favourite movie genre is biographical, and especially, music biographies. The costumes, makeup, and portrayal were all incredible. The story shows how mind-f&cked she was as a child star in flashbacks and how terribly lonely she was as an adult as her career waned. Thank you, uploaders.
(PS: The yellow on-screen ad-writing does go away, even though it kind of sits and slowly scrolls in front of the screen for a bit in the very beginning.)

Really made you see how she had been manipulated, gaslighted, drugged and used ever since she had been a child till death. I never quite got it till I saw this. Similarly with Norma Jean Baker.

This is a must watch vs I cant be bothered etc. I was surprisingly appreciating Rene’s delivery of Judy and have always highly regard Rene as an excellent actor. I Still can’t understand why Judy’s daughter Liza was disgruntled with not having any say with the script etc and therefore did not support the movie. Unless the movie (script) was not accurate and totally fabricated. Nevertheless, cudos to Rene with acting and singing ….FYI she sang all the songs, no voice over here. Enjoy! Cheers!!!

I dont know if others felt this way,but I felt completely annoyed by this character i didnt like this movie at all.,I can see why others did but i couldnt even finish it she was so annoying.

Ditzygypsy 1 points 5 years ago. 5/5 stars.

You feel she didn’t do a good job of portraying Judy? I don’t understand what was annoying. I don’t care for Judy Garland, myself, because I’m not a fan of Broadway-style singing, but she is definitely a legend and immensely iconic, and I thought Zellweger really nailed Judy in just about every way possible.

iomi7676 -1 points 5 years ago.

Maybe she did do a great job. I just felt annoyed because of the behavior i witnessed from her, like she was a spoiled brat. She wanted to go to london because she was broke but acted completely ungrateful when she got there. I dont think she really acted that way. I dont hate judy but i dont want to remeber her like that.

Ditzygypsy 0 points 5 years ago. 5/5 stars.

She was messed up on bennies and alcohol and she’d been near death previously with a ballooned liver and gallons of fluid on her body. The chemicals and the awful treatment she’d experienced over the years from everyone from her mother to directors and studio heads (especially Busby Berkeley…he was an asshole and a slave-driver) left her mind somewhat broken. I do believe she was unreliable in London and when she had her TV show, but that’s what happens when you’re controlled by greedy people and drugs. This behaviour has been shown and written about in other documentaries and books, so even though we don’t know all the details of the private conversations she had with everyone, many, including people who loved her have spoken about this. And it happened to a lot of stars back then, especially women. I didn’t find it annoying; I found it made me feel sorry for her. She was a firecracker and a fierce force to be reckoned with who gave her all when she did perform. You can only do that so much without proper nutrition and rest and recharge time before physical and mental things start to break. That much is very well known.
