Better than Wine is an understated period drama set in the 1890s about four friends who gather to share an outdoor lunch. Inspired by writers like Anton Chekhov and Henry James, it is an intimate character study, affectionate, ironic, sad and funny, for as the day progresses, it becomes clear that all is not as sunny as the bright afternoon. It is a densely textured evocation of a time that was neither sweeter nor simpler than our own, but one with its own delights and tensions. |
