Tsang Su Yuk is assistant to Mr. Lao Tsang, the sacred chosen one to reincarnate the Monkey God within the Taoist Chinese community. In a Hong Kong temple, he is busy preparing the annual ceremony dedicated to the Monkey God which attracts thousands of worshippers and helps to collect tens of thousands of dollars for the temple association. Hoax or supernatural powers guide Mr. Lao into cutting his tongue with a sword, climbing a ladder of sharp knives barefoot and walking on fire. Where do the people of Hong Kong draw the line between superstition and capitalist pragmatism? After spending seven years in jail in mainland China, Tsang Su Yuk goes against communist politicians’ orders to help the cult survive in the bustling banking city of Hong Kong. “The Monkey God will hopefully help us pave the way to Hong Kong’s prosperous future under China’s rule.”, says Tsang in his hope to save the city from its uncertain fate. |
