The short film Faceless Women, follows the story of Shamim Akhtar, who after being raped by a gang, was thrown acid on her for dishonor. She has received support from the Smile Again Foundation. The foundation provides support for the survivors of acid attacks and also pays for their plastic surgeries. The victims also work at the foundation, that functions as a beauty center. The president and founder of the Smile Again Foundation, Massarah Misbah, explains the complicated situation of women in Pakistan and details some of the intertwined issues that are involved on the acid attacks. Male chauvinism is one of the greatest causes of the attacks, while religious issues are what keep families from pleading against the attackers in those cases. |
