The woman takes the apple and bites the seeds out of the core. She disposes of the apples and carefully cleans off the seeds. She sets to work, grinding them up with the edge of a pineapple can. The child helps, as if playing a game. When the seeds are ground, the woman removes an old bread sleeve, hidden in the door of the small refrigerator, and dumps a pile of ground apples seeds into a waiting jar of fig preserves. She mixes and cleans away the evidence. And then, the heavy footsteps. The keys in the door. She watches and waits. From the folklore of a farmer’s almanac a young mother finds the recipe for her daughter’s freedom. |
