Bobby Jones is paired with an exuberant but less-than-gifted golfer, Leon Errol, who slices his first drive behind a tree. Using his spoon (fairway wood), Errol tries several times to hit under and through the tree. Jones walks over and suggests that Errol use his mashie niblick (nine iron) to hit it over the tree onto the green. Errol confesses not to knowing how to hit the shot, so Jones takes him to the middle of the fairway and gives him a lesson: stance and position, backswing, wrist action, stroke, and follow through. Errol heads back to his lie to try the shot. The Atlanta Constitution’s O.B. Keeler, who dubbed Jones’s previous year’s victories the “Grand Slam,” narrates. |
