Everywhere in the Soviet occupation zone, where sought-after German specialists can be found, armed special Soviet units are on the move. Houses are surrounded, an interpreter translates the brief address of the officer on duty: “By order of the Soviet military administration, you have to work in the Soviet Union for five years. You can bring your wife and children with you and as many things as you want …”. A shock for those affected. Helmut Banas, a Junkers engine specialist, was also confronted with the Stalin order on October 22nd at 5:00 a.m. Several freight trains, full of “marvels of German engineering” and the engineers that go with them, steam off towards the east. |
