‘Lillie’ is a compelling story about a powerful relationship between a mother and her young daughter and the clinging dependence they have for one another. Lillie who is 11 years old, is witness to her mother Scarlet’s struggle to survive in a world whereby she feels she has been let down. Scarlet a tortured and failed artist battles with depression as she tries to come to terms with her painful divorce and her failed career. The only element in her life that makes her ‘alive’ is her young daughter whom she depends on vastly. We witness the strong bond they have for one another as Lillie tries to make her mother happy. The only time Lillie allows herself to be a child is when she looks through her mother’s art books and is fascinated by a painting called ‘The Lady of Shalott’. Lillie relates to the lady as she is trapped in a castle with a curse upon her and she starts to mimic the lady’s hairdo, her clothes and her imagination starts to take her on a journey where she can forget all her worries. |
