Gemsbok, ibex, barasyngha, nyala. Their names may be unfamiliar, but these rare game species, originally from Africa and Asia, now roam Texas ranches in numbers that exceed 250,000. And in an irony as big and rich as Texas, their proliferation has resulted from their popularity with hunters. Enthusiasts will pay anywhere from $2,000 to $20,000 to hunt a ‘texotic.’ While this flourishing micro-economy and sub-culture has gone unrecognized by most of the world, ‘A Kind of Wild’ is a documentary that presents a portrait of the industry, as illustrated by a cross-section of invested individuals: an amateur breeder, a researcher, a ranch hand and a hunter. The film is an exploration of paradoxical relationships between people and animals, between economics and conservation. |
