Busby Berkeley’s a big deal in early musical films. He was there from the beginning of talkies when sound first came about. His direction of the dance sequences during the musical numbers made him very famous. With this film, he finally got to direct an entire picture & not just the musical sequences.
Benny Goodman scored over 20 pieces for this. Although his drummer Gene Krupa went on to lead his own band, legend Louis Belson did this film. With Benny’s music, Busby features the super cute Carmen Miranda in a large production of The Lady In The Tutti-Fruiti Hat as she leads 100 chorus girls in a Berkeley banana masterpiece that pretty much solidified Carmen’s identity.
Zanuck’s protege baby face Alice Faye is the star. She’s the wife of Jack Benny band leader Phil Harris (also known as Jungle Book’s Balloo The Bear, Thomas from The Aristocats & Robin Hood’s Little John). Alice sings many featured songs including a super psychedelic truly kaleidoscopic Journey To A Star & the uber neon Polka Dot Ballet with kid dancers as well as chorus girls.
Throughout the film, Busby features ballroom dancing with Tony DeMarco & acrobatic dance as well as his large chorus numbers. There are lots of great co-stars, including the great character actors Charlotte Greenwood & Edward Everett Horton (Later known for Bullwinkle’s Fractured Fairy Tales).
Movies like this aren’t going to be thick with plot & story since that’s not their point. A production like this is more like a filmed stage performance, not unlike a Cirque DeSoliel show. It’s just big entertainment with loose story points to knit it together. Busby is a thing all his own, and a few people noted this particular Busby work is sort of like Fantasia since it has some odd trippy visuals in it. He used choreography but also photography tricks for his 1st full-length direction.
A country worried with a world at war needed something happy, so Busby was given this script, lots of money, time & full 3 color film stock to capture a production that would give weary audiences something other than war.
