Tom Brand, a half-breed, lives a lonely life with his one daughter, Nita, a girl of seventeen, whom he idolizes. Luke Lansing, a young miner, sees the girl passing one day, and stopping for a drink of water, makes her acquaintance. Tom is suspicious of Luke, but cannot say too much. Luke, through a friend, gets Tom an offer of a weekโs work at some distance. Tom departs and Luke persuades Nita to elope with him. Tom returns a week later to find his home empty. He searches everywhere, but can find no trace of her. Meantime Luke and his friend, Jake Bailey, have gone up into the mountain country to search for gold. Luke is already weary of Nita and finds her a hindrance. Jake brings news of a rich strike in the mountains, where she would be a drag on them, and while she is sleeping they pack up their things and leave her. She wanders back to her old home and dies in Tomโs arms. He swears vengeance on Luke, follows him for many days, at last overtakes him. In fear Luke backs away from his pursuer and topples over the precipice. The half-breed lifts his hands in supplication to the Great Spirit, humbly acknowledging the avenging of his wrong. |
