In 1938, while at winter headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Clyde Beatty opened a school for girl lion trainers. One of the ten girls that signed up for the school was a 15-year-old Bayside, New York high school student named Pat English. Two years later, she is featured in this Pete Smith short displaying the skills taught her, using a whip (for cues for the lions and not as a defense weapon), a pistol loaded with blanks and a four-legged kitchen chair. |
