During a transit from San Francisco Bay to the Port of Los Angeles in 2004, the cargo ship M/V Med Taipei weathered a storm but lost fifteen 40-ft shipping containers in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS), and another nine south of the sanctuary. One of these containers was discovered by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) on at a depth of over 1,200 meters. A science team led by Dr. Andrew DeVogelaere and Dr. James Barry conducted a research expedition aboard MBARI’s R/V Western Flyer to assess the impact of this container on the local environment. This short documentary also discusses the international problem of thousands of containers lost at sea each year.
