At its core, Magpie is a story that delves into the vast changes in the physical, social and cultural landscape of East Anglia during World War II. The film’s protagonist, Lily (Hannah Morrish), sees her husband George (Matt Downton) become increasingly isolated and unable to return to his normal life at home following his experiences on the front line. Magpie uses this story line to highlight the suffering that many men (and their families) went through in this period. As she struggles to understand George’s condition, Lily finds an escape in the comfort of a new friendship with American Serviceman Charlie (Mateo Oxley). George remains confined with their home, growing ever more paranoid and disconnected from their marriage. |
