Leroy Sand, an 85-year-old Iowa farmer, competes in the ‘Golden Agers’ division of the 2014 National Cornhusking Championship. In the 1930s, Time magazine called husking ‘…the fastest growing sport in the world’ and the national contest drew 125,000 spectators. Today’s event garners only a few hundred hearty onlookers. Still, Sand and his contemporaries, the last generation of farmers that grew up harvesting corn by hand, contend for the title of champion husker. |
