This film is a romantic comedy focused on a relationship between a Caucasian man, Paddy, and an African-American woman, Laura. Laura has recently ended their relationship but has a change of heart when an East-Indian woman, Sunita, catches Paddy’s eye. On the surface this is a scenario of conflict that sets the stage for comedic and dramatic effect however there is also a more subtle underlying examination of race. Paddy has a history of exclusively dating “black” women but in this instance Sunita’s skin tone is actually significantly darker than Laura’s begging the question who is the “black” woman and does this label still hold any meaning today? |
