Sarah is moving in with Oliver, into his flat where he’s lived alone since moving out of his parents’s home. Despite the fact that he is thirty years old, and a successful doctor, Oliver struggles with a strong oedipal bond with his mother, Helen, and has agreed to let her “help out”. Throughout the day, Sarah is repeatedly thwarted in her attempts to get close to Oliver and as Helen’s anxiety at seeing Sarah move in with her only son increases, the tension between the three of them build. Eventually, Oliver snaps and aggressively pulls down Sarah’s painting from the wall, sending her crying to the bedroom. After he goes to try to calm her down, Oliver returns to the living room and leads Sarah in a small dance and embrace in front of his mother. Helen, finally, takes the hint and leaves. Oliver finally speaks up for himself and tells Sarah what he really wants for the flat (a large television) which is greeted with a luke-warm response. |
