Believing that he is just on a trip to New York City to see the Statue of Liberty for his fifth birthday Samuel Scott becomes instead a foil for his parents to create Notes on Liberty. On its surface the movie plays like a portrait of the boy’s zeal for the statue. Yet, Notes playfully (at first) signals the difference between the ideals of the statue with the culture of fear and cynicism that still dominate post 9/11 America. |
