Grace Williams, a little colored girl, working in a tobacco factory, slips a note into a can of tobacco. The note gives her address and her object, matrimony. Some years later young George M. Jackson buys the package of tobacco and hastens to his rooms, where he finds his lawyer, who hands him his uncle’s will, in which is contained the information that young Jackson must marry within a week after his uncle’s death if he wants his fortune. Nervously Jackson opens his pipe, and finds the note. With little hesitancy Jackson writes to the colored girl and tells her to come on. On the last day she arrives, to young Jackson’s utter horror, astonishment and despair. She is put out, after which George proposes to the maid and drags her with all haste to the marriage license bureau, where the couple are married. |
