Le Pénitent is a 2014 French language film directed, produced and scripted by Louis Martins. The film follows the central character, ‘The Girl’ as she comes to terms with the loss of a friend, her surreal dreams and the darkness inside her. The film stars Kate Victors as ‘The Girl’, Adnan Akram as the ‘SS Officer’, Neil Stone as ‘The Private’ and Rosemary Locker as ‘Helena Amsel’. Principal photography took place in London and Paris in 2011. Le Pénitent was shot in black and white in a La Nouvelle Vague (The New Wave) style. Martins’ used film-noir and neo-noir methods to create the dark and foreboding world in which the story unfolds. Le Pénitent is the first film by Martins’ in the European art cinema style.
