At the entrance to Christopher Mello’s Asheville, North Carolina garden, there’s a brown clay head (part goat or ram?) flanked by a white skull with one bloodshot eyeball. Maybe, one might think, this is a public garden or perhaps one of those community projects where residents in the neighborhood divvy up plots and grow organic food. Do you go in? Does your going in or not going in say anything in particular about you? A talented artist who works with clay and metal, Christopher has made a garden with highlights that include a blue bottle tree, Shovelhenge, a fountain from salvaged steel, and the new form of blue poppy thirteen years in the making. |
