The Greeks’ joie de vivre and the beauties of their ancient land are shown off with zest by movie star Melina Mercouri, herself an outstanding example of what the Hellenes can produce. Miss Mercouri sings a little, and takes us on a tour of such landmarks as the Acropolis, Delphi, and the Aegean Islands. But more important is something less tangible: the temperament of the Greek man-in-the-street, with his intense involvements, delight in conversation and music, and love of country. In Athens, we visit a night spot where Melina greets some of her friends, listens to songs and watches Giorgos Provias and Theodoros Calpaxidis dance; see the capital city’s flea market; and enter a taverna, where patrons argue vehemently over just what aspects of Greek life the American TV audience ought to see. On the island of Crete, we visit the legendary Labyrinth, tour a museum of Minoan art, and attend a wedding ceremony. Then back to Athens for the Carnival celebration. |
