Tells the story of the roots of the song, “Annie Laurie.” In the mid-18th century, civil war embroils Scotland. The Laurie and Douglas clans are on opposite sides. William Douglas and Annie Laurie are in a garden outside the church in Glencairn, where newly-married couples sit in the wishing chair. He’s off to fight, but comes to see Annie first to tell her he loves her. Her father and brothers arrive, Will asks for Annie’s hand in marriage; Sir Robert consents if William will renounce his clan. He refuses and must escape capture. Annie is locked in a cell by her father. Can this story end happily? What of the song? |
