The Myth: The Wounan ancestors believed that one day their God sent books to their people. They all went out into the jungles to wait for the books, but when the books arrived, it was on the back of a horse. Having never seen a horse before, the Wounan fled. The horse kept going into the neighboring Latino villages where they grabbed the books off of the horse’s back. The Wounaan were a people living under the oppression of their neighboring Latino villages. They believed that because the Latinos got the books that hey can read and write, but the Wounaan would never be able to have a written language or be good at commerce. They begin a ritual called The Prayer Canoe where the tribe members begin to yearn for another opportunity to catch Heaven’s Horse. |
