Filmed in Cambridgeshire this moving documentary charts the closing of the last Victorian ironmongers in the Fens. A Pandora’s box, it’s a unique window into the past, little changed since Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. This hardware shop is a portal to another era when the local ironmongers was central to the community and as important as the church or school. An era when crowds in their thousands would flock to Cambridgeshire to witness world champion fen skaters compete in the icy wilderness. We meet the locals who have shopped here for generations and the owner who swore an oath never to change the shop. This poignant and resonant documentary comes at a critical point in the turbulent history of our high streets. |
