The inspiration for “Anathema” originally came from the Biblical story of David and Jonathan, and the debates surrounding the close bond that they had shared. But the film evolved into much more than just a modern-day re-telling of their story. “Anathema” is a short film that ends up raising a number of rather large questions: about Christianity and homosexuality, about love and grief, about life and death. At its core, this film is one man’s journey into his past to make sense of his present. The narrative of “Anathema” unapologetically jumps between reality and illusion, half-truths and forgotten incidents. It blurs the binaries of real and unreal, disavowing the belief that memory is a factual recollection, viewing it as fundamentally chaotic and delusional. |
