In 1983, Santa Barbara Avenue in South Los Angeles was renamed Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, three years before the declaration of King’s birthday as a national holiday. The event was celebrated by the first Kingdom Day Parade, now an annual tradition The Los Angeles chapter of the International Black Writers & Artists (INBWALA) was invited to participate in the festivities and Mongo Taribubu was asked to write a poem commemorating the event. With all respect to the memory and work of Dr. King, Mongo wondered if African Americans were in effect being denigrated by being told to overcome, when black people had done nothing to create the problem….’Who are we? What have we done? Why should our history be, We shall overcome?’ ‘ |
