With all the differences people of the Balkans have between each other, they all carry the same memories of a lifetime spent together, or side by side. Memories of a past which might transfer itself into the future. The difficulties of the 1990s and the new “rules” of living in the newborn single states, have made a lot of people look back on their communist past with some sort of nostalgia. For the others, the difficulties of today are nothing but proof of the mistakes made in the past. This documentary film reflects on the collective memory of the times of the Red Star shared throughout the Balkans, as well as the uncertainties which dominate this time of transition from one big joint entity into another even bigger and more confusing home. Standing face to face between the promise of a better future in the form of “Europe” - the same one they were taught for so long to mistrust, and the old nationalist perspective which still dominates their lands - the people of the Balkans are now caught between two choices and for the first time, there is no one to tell them which the proper way may be. |
