The symbolic aspect of a pile of coconuts conjures up a stream-of-thought for Deisy DeLa Cruz (Priscilla Garcia). The coconuts take her back in time to a term that has left a bad taste in her mouth and a sour note in her memories. The term reminds her that she is the kind of Latina who is culturally hollow and whose identity is broken, if not cracked. Knowing only a handful of Spanish words, her native language comes in tiny shreds. Until this point in her life Spanish was never needed. Until this point in her life it has become ever more important. Feeling pressured to become bilingual, Deisy enrolls into college only to find that instructors and students question her need for Spanish courses. As she moves forward in her Spanish education, she winds backward to past decades to crack open the core of “The Coconut Syndrome”.
