Québec City is seen as the gateway of the St. Lawrence and the gateway to the lesser known Kingdom of the Saguenay. Long before the pilgrims arrived in North America, French explorer Jacques Cartier landed in this region, and French explorer Samuel de Champlain developed the region with the Citadel in Québec City being the military centerpiece. This travelogue goes northeast along the St. Lawrence to the junction between the St. Lawrence and Saguenay Rivers, then northwest along the Saguenay, where the Algonquin chiefs and Cartier searched for rumored riches. The first stop is Tadoussac, a historic fur trading post which is now primarily a summer resort town on the confluence of the two rivers. The Saguenay is not only steeped with history, but is a geographic marvel, with sheer granite cliffs as high as 1,800 feet above water level. The trip ends at the Broadback River Fishing Camp located on the shores of Lake Assinica, a fishing mecca of the region.
