The Movie opens up with Maria walking into the dressing room. She puts down a mop, broom and a bucket and then starts to fluff one of the pillows on the couch. Seeing the dressing room table, she goes over and sits down at it. Looking in the mirror, she primps her hair and then says “I’d like to thank the academy” when the door behind her suddenly swings open. Maria jumps up, embarrassed, as Henry J Goldberg walks into the room. Playing with a cigar, Henry says that he thought Maria was amazing tonight. He says that he loves theatre and then starts to dig around for matches to his cigar. Maria looks over at the poster on the wall, realizes that Henry is mistaking her for the Starlet who’s changing room this is. She starts to protest but Henry starts pacing and talking. He says that she was amazing on stage tonight but that theatre is a dying medium. Henry says that it’s all about the motion pictures now. Maria starts to agree but is cut off by Henry as he pulls out a contract and offers her a job as a Hollywood actress. Maria tries to tell Henry that he has the wrong girl, but Henry just becomes more persistent. He tells her that California is amazing, beautiful and then asks her whether she wants to be at this small time theater for the rest of her life. Maria apprehensively between the poster and the contract.
