It is a story about human sexuality. It is about Alan’s struggle to reconcile his memories of the flirtation with his teacher, knowing that she couldn’t possibly have been flirting back…or was she? it is about his struggle with his attraction to his 15 year old neighbor, which he obviously cannot act on, his struggle to find meaning in any sexual encounter with a woman his own age. It is about Patty’s (the 15 year old) struggle to enter into womanhood and decide what kind of sexual woman she wants to be, and of Saffron’s (her 15 year old classmate) struggle to reconcile her very grown up sexual desires with her 15 year old curfews and rules. It is about Miss Shellagh’s (the now 60 year old teacher) struggle with the loss of her vibrant sexuality with age, and the reality of a sexless marriage.
