The harrowing story of one young man’s escape from the 1993 genocide in Burundi East Africa. Deo Niyizonkiza was a 20 year old medical student when a genocidal civil war began ending life as he knew it. He spent 6 months on the run from machete wielding mobs and and military death squads in Burundi and neighboring Rwanda. Deo managed to escape all the way to New York where he lived homeless in Central Park unable to speak English. Plagued by nightmares, sick and weighing ninety pounds, Deo was taken in by a childless Soho couple who helped him learn English and ultimately attend Harvard University to study health and pursue his dream of one day building a hospital in his home country. |
