A Chilean family of German descent must confront a painful episode dating back to World War II. Silence unfolds when one of its members moves to Berlin and begins to research the disappearance of his grandfather’s twin brother, who was a pilot in the German Army. Back and forth, between Chile and Germany, the director turns to his own story to reflect on how his family’s memory and thus history, has been shaped, and how past behaviors have echoes and consequences in present generations. The documentary film Onkel Günter is a personal and reflexive take on diaspora, migration, family and selective memory. |
