In 2014 German theatre landscape was declared Intangible World Culture Heritage due to its unique density and diversity. At the same time, dozens of city and state theatres are struggling for existence, drained by governments, financially and artistically rendered unnecessary - to the detriment of artists, employees, spectators and, last but not not least: entire communities. Using the example of the state theatre in Neustrelitz, NOT HERE TO CRITICIZE examines the effects on artistry, minds, tempers and the community caused by structural downsizing as part of a rigid cultural policy. Calmly observing protagonists from different departments like drama, orchestra, operetta, dance, ateliers and management, the documentary links the different players to each other and reveals theatre as an institution that constantly reproduces itself, strenuously drawing from the resources of everyone involved, day after day. It’s time to think matters over: how can it work, how can it move on, not only theatre in Neustrelitz, but theatre in general? The utopian constructs quickly hit the wall in the face of the reality. |
