Are we in fact living in a simulation? This is the question postulated, wrestled with, and ultimately argued for in the latest provocation from acclaimed documentary stylist Rodney Ascher (Room 237, The Nightmare) through archival footage, compelling interviews with real people shrouded in digital avatars, and a collection of cases from some of our most iconoclastic figures in contemporary culture. |

The Dissident (2021)

So lockdown is just server maintenance ?
“philosophical evidence”…. sorry? just this made me not watch it.
“Philosophy may be called the “science of sciences” probably in the sense that it is, in effect, the self-awareness of the sciences and the source from which all the sciences draw their world-view and methodological principles, which in the course of centuries have been honed down into concise forms.”
Some copypasta that I hope will balance Sj’s perspective so that it does not dissuade people from giving this documentary the chance it deserves.
“oo, he say bad thing , I must reply with copy paste on thing I think he say bad thing about “… yeah great philosophy.. next time try to think about what some one is saying… don’t assume what you think is always the right thing…
I think it is important to give a doc like this a chance instead of reading the description and negatively stereotyping it based off two words.
Is this the worst comment on the site
I think the choice of words was made to attract viewers who are entertained by delusional people. I don’t think he tries to document philosophy with evidence and testimony. Just the loonies.
First, thanks PW Team for all you do! (Love docs)! This topic: fascinating and worthy of earnest debate beyond the juvenile worship of The Matrix and Minecraft (love Matrix trilogy!). A few of the presenters - or “avatars” - tell us more about this documentary than I can express at this late hour; words of the real, adult people are more compelling. Kids trying to teach us this stuff? Well, consider young Joshua. Seeing his mom’s face explode really messed him up! So much so, well, he deserved an ice cold Coke and a team of lawyers. 2+/5 stars for the effort and tough subject matter
Everyone in this doc is clearly on the spectrum. I’m not surprised that they think the world isn’t real.
How very ableist of you.
How is that ableist? Elon Musk is on the spectrum?
Pretty sure it was the entire chosen tone & wording of the statement which is perceived to be ridicule of the academic scientific theory as well as derision of spectrum population, equating the two.
“A study published late last year in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders found that students with autism choose majors in science, technology, engineering and math at higher rates than students in the general population.”
True. We’ve had that paper a long time. Kuchment did her work.
copy and pasting this quote doesn’t change what you said and really has nothing to do with it. You said something derogatory and your response is “Elon Musk is on the spectrum” like he quantifies something. When someone says something racist, replying with “but I have a Black friend” does not mean the original statement was not racist. Your original comment was out of pocket.
Yes it does. Watch the documentary. Two of the main speakers in the movie, Elon Musk and Nick Bostrom, have talked publicly about their autism.
it DOES NOT EXCUSE YOUR COMMENT
Did you even watch the documentary? They talk about it in the movie.
