Details:

Based on the NY Times best-selling memoir “Guantánamo Diary” by Mohamedou Ould Slahi, this is the true story of Slahi’s fight for freedom after being detained and imprisoned without charge by the U.S. Government for years. Alone and afraid, Slahi finds allies in defense attorney Nancy Hollander and her associate Teri Duncan who battle the U.S. government in a fight for justice that tests their commitment to the law and their client at every turn. Their controversial advocacy, along with evidence uncovered by a formidable military prosecutor, Lt. Colonel Stuart Couch, uncovers shocking truths and ultimately proves that the human spirit cannot be locked up.

Def worth a watch, Jody is such a pro, hell she had it at 13 in Taxi driver and you can see what she had back then in this movie too, pretty amazing. This is a good story about right and wrong, the rule of law and what you can prove, and if you are going to hold yourself to a higher standard can you maintain that stance even in the face of adversity ?

This was an awesome movie. Very well done. Great actors! 5/5

I’m sure the movie switching aspect ratios frequently has some meaning, I just couldn’t figure it out.

Also, Benedict Cumberbatch doing a pseudo-southern American accent was a little weird. Don’t get me wrong, Benedict Cumberbatch is an amazing actor, but I don’t see why you would cast him in a role that requires such a uniquely regional accent. Maybe American viewers don’t hear it as an accent, but as a Canadian, it is quite a glaring problem. They could have cast any number of actors who can pull that off, Matthew McConaughey comes to mind, or Tommy Lee Jones, if he’s still doing movies.

The story is great, and the actor who played Mohamedou was amazing. Jodie Foster was great too, though her age is showing in this one. I’ve heard Shailene Woodley is a good actress, but I can’t get over her role in the Divergent series. I know that probably wasn’t her fault, but sometimes first impressions are impossible to get over.

Overall, if you can get over some of the weird choices made in the movie, and actually keep up with the movie (it gets a little hard when they don’t explain or expand on what are in Mohamedou’s letters), there is an enjoyable experience in it, if not one that is a thought piece.

Do you mean the movie itself is garbage or are you referring to the quality of the CAM copy?

darklighter1 1 points 4 years ago.

I believe he’s referring to the director of the movie, one Kevin McDonald. The man is a known for his lack of ambition and cutting corners. He had the gall to film the movie on his iPhone and and quite literally “phone it in”.

joshmajor1987 0 points 4 years ago.

You both DO see he said “Filmed on a phone while sleeping”, right?? Lol and “Total garbage quality” as well. Seems pretty obvious haha I’m glad he/she said it tho because I was gonna try it but it’s obvious I shouldn’t yet Lol

etim 3 points 4 years ago.

If it was obvious to me I wouldn’t have asked.

This was a powerful true story to be told on film. The acting is good, but a lot of the story is sad and disturbing. Recommended for everyone to watch.

Although Mohamedou Ould Salahi wasn’t formally Charged, back in those days, with
Bush Jr. President…911 fresh in our memories,
Slahi had been trained in Al Qaeda training camp.
Slahi had initially been suspected of connections to a planned bombing of LAX airport in 2000, part of the so-called Millennium Plot, but as he repeatedly told interrogators, he had severed all ties with extremist group Al Qaeda in 1992.
Obama President…2010, a federal judge ruled that the US could not continue to detain Slahi, concluding that there was no credible evidence that he was part of Al Qaeda. And yet Slahi remained in prison for a further six and a half years.
Slahi should have been released at that time.
~And yet Slahi remained in prison for a further six and a half years, after the government opposed his release and filed an appeal in the DC Circuit. He was eventually freed in October 2016, after it was determined that he posed no significant threat to the US.
Perhaps some of the proceeds of this film should be sent to Slahi for President Obama administration not releasing him in 2010….
A good companion short video about 20 minutes long and well worth a watch,

As much as some pepole would like to have guilt by association the reality is that that is intrinsically wrong. So you have the constitution, it affords you rights and freedoms, you cant just arbitrarily dispense that otherwise you stand for nothing.

Frac -4 points 4 years ago. 2/5 stars. (Contains Spoilers)

agree, upto a point. Slahi was training/attending an Al Qaida training camp… Also, where there’s smoke there’s fire, but when proven not guilty, should be set free.

alfonzoo -1 points 4 years ago. 1/5 stars.

Really boring movie
